Upcycle Lamp Shade

In this assignment we needed to find something that is wasted and completely un valuable in society and turn it into something that will have more value and be treasured by people. I work in a bar and every night see bags full of used straws go to waste. In this assignment I looked at different ways of turning them into something else. I thought they would be quite limiting as to what you could do with them but was surprised to find out that there were quite a few options. I decided on this lampshade.

  1. Intriguing idea. I like how it is quite rough, it seems more natural that way.
my only suggestion is possibly to make it more evident what your material is as I first thought it was the cable from a plug-in cord until I read the words.
    Great work though

  2. I really liked this!! I was really impressed with how much "style" it had, reminding me of something from the 1920s with all the tassles etc. The only thing i did just think is..would the straws melt with the heat of the light? In saying that.. (im not sure if you did this or not)you could easily put some kind of lining inside it so it wouldnt melt!

  3. The straws on this lamp gives a lot of character to the product itself as daniel pointed out how it looks rough and natural. I like the use of the material because I have seen a lot of unused straws being littered and to turn it into a lamp shade is a pretty good idea.

  4. This caught my eye immediately. It's such a simple, clever solution to upcycling straws. I like the choice to use blacks straws as adds a sense of elegance, but works with the jagged edges. My only thing to add would be to see if it worked having holes in the straws for the light to come through the sides? But awesome work!

  5. A very clever idea. It does have a certain 'style' or elegance to it as the others have mentioned.
But I do agree with Emily about them melting from the light. And also, how does the shade attach to the lamp stand?

  6. It is a fun idea. It looks nice and modern and if you don't pay enough attention, you would not be able to tell it is make out of sraws.I like how you put them in different levels and ideas. Because it is made out of straws , it can be come into all different shape and colour! great work.

  7. The second i saw this product i was very impressed with the way you have used an old lamp shade and straws to create a jaggered effect. The way they have been joined is very clever and creative. Although the colours of the straws could have been alternated and the lamp shade itself could have been different also. Although very impressive!
